Vandals have once again damaged headstones at one of Norwalk's oldest cemeteries.
Within the past few weeks, about 10 headstones have been vandalized at Pine Island Cemetery in Matthews Park. Another 10 were damaged in the spring.
Some headstones were knocked over and broken, while others were stolen. Some of the graves are 300 years old. Officials estimate it will cost $5,000 to fix the damage.
"It's really heartbreaking," said Norwalk Historical Commission Chairman David Park. "I think it's ignorance on the part of a few people who don't understand the consequences of their actions."
Police have increased patrols, but admit anyone can access the area. They also say it's hard to see the cemetery at night from the road.
