A group of veterans from American Legion Post 3 organized a food drive at a Stamford supermarket Saturday to help stock the empty shelves of a local food bank.
People at the Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County say more and more people are asking for emergency food every day. They say many could go hungry without funding.
Organizers set a goal of two tons of food, and say last year they collected 1.5 tons. They collected boxes of cereal, rice, sauces and canned goods.
?This is my town, I've lived here 76 years and I want to give back to my community,? says veteran Carmine Vaccaro.
The food bank says one out of every five children in Connecticut is hungry or at risk of going hungry.
