Weston teen diagnosed with resistant staph infection
The Weston School District announced a high school student has been diagnosed with an antibiotic-resistant staph infection just days after a Virginia teen died of a similar condition.
The infection, known as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, or MRSA, does not respond to penicillin-related drugs. However, it can be treated with antibiotics. Experts say the infection can be spread by skin-to-skin contact or sharing items used by an infected person.
Students told News 12 Connecticut an 11th-grade girl was the individual diagnosed with the infection. The district says it is also awaiting the test results of another student.
Rumors are flying around the Weston School District among students and parents. School officials say they are trying to contain the situation and not cause alarm.
Students, and athletes in particular, say they are taking precautions like bandaging any open wounds.
School officials say the student may have come in contact with the infection outside of school. Interim School Superintendent Dr. John Reed says he contacted the state health department and was told there was no reason to close the school building.
