What’s Ailing You: Swimmer’s itch
This week, News 12 Connecticut's What's Ailing You looks at a summer rash that can crop up after spending time in the water.
Doctors say swimmer's itch is common, and if you get it, it doesn't mean you're dirty.
Experts say you can cut your chances of getting it if you take a shower and towel off really well after spending time in shallow water. The red, bumpy and incredibly itchy rash is an allergic reaction to a small microscopic parasite that lives and breeds in shallow water.
Dr. Kyle Custis, of Fairfield Urgent Care, says the rash doesn't present a major medical issue, but you want to get a handle on the itching so you don't scratch your skin until it's raw.
Custis says the rash can last about a week and suggests putting some cortisone cream on the rash or taking an antihistamine.
