Workers in southwestern Connecticut and around the nation rallied Wednesday to push for a $15 minimum wage.

In Stamford, janitors and their union organizers rallied on behalf of minimum wage workers, saying it's impossible for them to make ends meet, with a national minimum wage of $7.25, which is $2 more in Connecticut.

"In Stamford, people have to work two or three jobs just to make ends meet," said Alberto Bernardez of the Service Employees International Union.

Organizers say the fight began several years ago with fast food workers in New York City and has launched a national debate on income inequality.

Demonstrations have taken place in New York, Chicago, Kansas City, Fort Lauderdale and Atlanta.

Meanwhile, opponents argue that many employers cannot afford higher salaries and would have to cut jobs if forced to pay more.
