Greenwich school officials announced the first confirmed case of H1N1 in a public school Thursday, as Western Middle School students are recovering at home after falling ill on a sixth-grade nature trip to North Colebrook.
Officials say the student with swine flu attends that school. The infected student was on the field trip with the other students who fell ill, but a school official says the student was feeling fine when they left for the trip. The student was out sick last Friday and was given anti-viral medication for mild flu-like symptoms.
Greenwich Public Schools says 19 children who went on the trip had fevers and an additional 36 complained of headaches and fatigue on Wednesday. The district says it has encouraged those kids who got sick to see a doctor before returning to school.
The Greenwich Department of Health says it doesn?t know whether the swine flu case is related to any of the other students? illnesses. So far, eight tests of the sixth-graders came back negative for influenza. The district says it is waiting to hear back from other parents with students that are sick.
Superintendent Dr. Betty Sternberg says it's uncertain how many students are actually sick, but 166 children were not in class Thursday.
