Two dogs died and two others were rescued during a fire Saturday night at a home in Fairfield.
Officials say firefighters were dispatched to the single-family house at 373 Greenfield St. around 8:15 p.m.
Firefighters searched the home, found no one inside but found out that the basement and attic were in flames.
Crews used three hoses to battle the fire inside the home and another hose to protect the house next door.
There was a delay battling the fire because two other engines had responded to other calls.
Firefighters were challenged with freezing temperatures, heavy winds and a fire hydrant that was did not initially work.
Crews were able to contain the fire in about 90 minutes.
Firefighters from Bridgeport and Westport assisted in other emergencies during the blaze.
Officials say AMR treated a neighbor who tried to shovel snow onto the fire for smoke inhalation.
There were no reported injuries.
United Illuminating was requested to secure the electricity at the residence.
Animal Control assisted two dogs that survived the fire as well as the ones who died.
The two dogs that survived were released to the family.
Fire officials say the house was left uninhabitable.
A cause of the fire was not immediately known.
