Two police departments in Fairfield County are joining forces to fight gun violence.
The Stamford and Norwalk police departments will host a "Gun Buyback and Keep Kids Safe" event on Oct. 5.
It's part of a statewide gun buyback and a free safe giveaway program.
Departments will give out gift cards from $25 to $300, depending on the kind of weapon turned in.
They will also have safes available for legal gun owners.
"In the past two years, we've been able to retrieve up to 33 guns, and we're hoping that with this news conference, we can encourage more individuals to come forward so those numbers can actually double," said Sgt. Adrianna Molina, of the Stamford Police Department.
Officials say non-working guns, ammunition, BB guns and pellets may be turned in but are not eligible for gift cards.
