People who suffer from respiratory issues may feel the effects of the Canadian wildfires most.

Connecticut DEEP issued an air quality alert for Tuesday, but it should be back to moderate/good by Wednesday.

Residents in Bridgeport, Trumbull and Stratford said they could smell smoke Tuesday.

Last week, Connecticut experienced similar smoky conditions from wildfires in Nova Scotia, Canada. The smoky smell Tuesday stems from fires in Quebec.

"Think of it, salt on an open wound. So those chemicals that come via the embers land in your airways and then it starts to create some mucus, you start to cough," said Dr. Steven Thau, director of pulmonary medicine at Hartford HealthCare.

Health officials are recommending people to stay indoors as often as possible until the haze fizzles out.
