A Bridgeport man underwent surgery Thursday after police say he was struck by a hit-and-run driver right in front of his home earlier this week.

The family of 64-year-old David Joyner, of Bridgeport, says the beloved grandfather is a retired school maintenance worker who enjoys spending time with his family.

They say Joyner's world came crashing down Monday when he was sitting in his Honda CRV on Spring Street when another vehicle struck him.

"A car was coming down the street, and my brother was sitting in his car listening to music, parked right in front of our house and the car ran right into my brother," said Joyner's sister Mary Dexter.

The family says the vehicle that struck Joyner is still on the scene Thursday, the driver left it there after fleeing the scene.

The family says Joyner suffered "severe spinal and neck injuries" along with a shattered collar bone and underwent several hours of surgery Thursday.

"And he was balled up and he was holding his head and he was crying, and he was telling me to call his wife," said Dexter.

The family joined police in asking for the public's help tracking down the driver.

"We do want justice. Yes, we do, most definitely," said Dexter.

A GoFundMe has been created to help Joyner's road to recovery.
