The former New Haven police officers arrested for the mistreatment and the paralysis injury of Randy Cox have applied for a probation program that could lead to the charges against them being dropped.

The applications angered Cox's supporters who criticized prosecutors for only charging the officers with misdemeanors like negligent cruelty and reckless endangerment.

Cox was left paralyzed from the chest down in June of 2022 after an officer driving a police van Cox was riding in stopped suddenly, sending him head first into a metal partition.

A New Haven judge scheduled a Nov. 1 hearing to determine whether the ex-officers are eligible for accelerated rehabilitation.
