Bridgeport’s American Legion Post was rededicated to reflect its namesake’s posthumous honor.

Formerly known as the Colonel Charles Young Post, the new sign now reads “Brigadier General Charles Young Post 140.”

Young was the third Black graduate of West Point and the first to achieve the rank of colonel.

Last year, 100 years after his death, Young was promoted to the rank of brigadier general.

For Bridgeport’s veterans, it’s an important distinction to make.

“His motto was, ‘Follow me.’ They buried him at Arlington National Cemetery, and we have gone there to visit his gravesite and lay a wreath there,” said Luis Sanchez, American Legion Post 140 Commander. “We are very proud to have this man’s name at our post.”

The new sign isn’t the only renovation coming to the post. Sanchez says they’re working with the city on new building and driveway improvements.
