State lawmakers are proposing drastic changes in response to the Bridgeport ballot stuffing scandal that began in November 2023.

Cities and towns could face a state election takeover for the most serious violations. All absentee ballot drop boxes would be required to have cameras on them and the footage would be available to the public.

The bills would create a new Municipal Election Accountability Board. When election irregularities occur, the new board would hold a hearing to decide if a city or town should be subject to a state takeover or some lesser form of state oversight.
Finally, the State Elections Enforcement Commission would have 90 days to finish an investigation, or they must turn it over to prosecutors.
The public can weigh in on these proposals at a public hearing next Monday.
