Two officers were shot and a man was killed after a pursuit came to a close Friday night in Newington, according to the Hartford Police Department.

The incident started just after 11 p.m. while officers were investigating illegal activity in Hartford. It ended in a violent shootout over 10 miles away.

During the investigation near 9 Fales St., police say an officer saw a male suspect take off running and pursued him. According to authorities, a struggle ensued and the officer felt what he believed was a firearm in the suspect's waistband.

Police say the suspect escaped and took off in a car. Officers pursued the vehicle and provided its description to nearby towns.

The pursuit ended at Webster Court, where officers stopped the suspect's vehicle and gunfire erupted.

The suspect was shot and pronounced dead at the scene, according to investigators.

Two officers were wounded - one from the Hartford Police Department and the other from the Rocky Hill Police Department.

Officials say they are both in stable condition as of Saturday afternoon at a nearby hospital.

Hartford Mayor Arunan Arulampalam, issued the following statement:

"I was devastated to learn about last night's officer-involved shooting following a vehicle pursuit that originated in Hartford. During the incident, an exchange of gunfire occurred, resulting in injuries to a Hartford Police officer and a Rocky Hill Police officer, and the death of the suspect at the scene.

Our hearts and thoughts are with the injured officers and their families. We are deeply relieved to share that both officers are currently in stable condition and recovering. Their bravery and swift actions, alongside officers from neighboring departments, helped prevent further harm to our neighborhoods and residents. We wish them a full and speedy recovery."
