News 12 took an inside look at the RED Fashion School in Norwalk – where students spend their course time measuring, threading and cutting fabrics.
Irina Simeonova, fashion designer and founder of the school, said she found her calling to be a teacher in the early 2000s. Now more than two decades later, she is still just as passionate about her work.
"This is licensed by the state of Connecticut, so this is actually the school I was dreaming of when I was thinking of it in 2002,” said Simeonova.
Students start with the basics and move up to more complex ideas – as long as they also show passion and love for working with fabrics.
"I think being the first space in Connecticut to offer something, it's wonderful because a lot of people have this passion,” said Joanne Lacrete, a student at Red Fashion School.
Lacrete is in her second month of the 15-month curriculum and said she already feels secure in the skills she's learned.
"She teaches very hands-on, so she helps you really grasp the skills or whatever you're learning,” said Lacrete.
"I don't believe in teaching a classroom, I believe in teaching individuals,” said Simeonova.
Simeonova has big plans and expectations for her students.
"They're very passionate and full of devotion,” said Simeonova.
