Forty thousand - that's how many oysters organizers say will be shucked and served this weekend as the 48th annual Norwalk Oyster Festival returns to Veterans Memorial Park and Marina.

"It's the best weekend of the year!" Mandy Gabriele, of Norwalk, says.

The Norwalk Seaport Association puts on the event every year. Thousands of people are expected to attend.

Proceeds from the festival benefit the Sheffield Island Lighthouse, an integral piece of Connecticut's maritime history.

"We're constantly restoring it, working on new sea walls, and everything," festival chairman Mike Reilly says. "Owning a really old lighthouse is a very expensive hobby."

Three whole days of food, rides, live music, and of course - oysters.

"It's a lot of oysters," Reilly says. "They're all Norm Bloom oysters, which are great. Copp's Island, we love those guys."
