Fairfield University hosted a mock crash on Wednesday to bring awareness to the impact and dangers of drunk and impaired driving.

The crash reflected what could be a real-life situation to those who decide to drive while impaired.

"Just a couple of drinks of any type of alcohol or substance can really cause such an impact and have a variety of different impacts on the community and other people around you," said Fairfield Police Sgt. Michael Stahl. "It's not just you as a driver that can be impacted."

Fairfield's police and fire departments, as well as the Fairfield University Department of Public Safety, participated in the demonstration, along with student actors.

The actors played an individual who was impaired and driving on the wrong side of the road at a high rate of speed.

"They crashed into a vehicle that was carrying several innocent passengers, who were doing the right thing and driving sober," said Stahl.

Fairfield officials prepare these mock crashes at high schools during prom time - it's the first time in a long time that they brought the scenario to a college campus.

"You have one life, and you shouldn't be careless with it. Ultimately the main emphasis was to not take the risk," said Thomas Holtz, a graduate student from Fairfield University.
