An attic fire drew a large response to a Hastings Street home in Bridgeport on early Sunday afternoon.

It happened around 12:15 p.m. and no one was injured, according to fire officials.

They said everyone inside had gotten out of the home by the time they arrived.

The fire marshal was trying to determine if the home was still habitable as of Sunday evening.

It was not immediately known how many people were displaced, but officials said the Red Cross will provide assistance if needed.

“It’s a bread-and-butter fire for us here in the City of Bridgeport. The men and women, they train a lot for this. So I expect things to go well, and they did,” said Bridgeport Fire Department Chief Lance Edwards. “Before they get a cleanup crew, we want to try to reduce the amount of damage inside, so at least the personal belongings are salvageable.”

Fire officials emphasized the importance of working smoke alarms in the home.

Residents can request a free installation from the city.
