Fairfield schools start with new road safety plan in place

Drivers dropping off kids on the first day of school in Fairfield Tuesday were met by new signage urging them to reduce their speed – an added safety measure meant to avoid a tragedy.

"I think the kids will be safer," said Fairfield parent Sandra Raposo. State lawmakers agree. "Ultimately, it’s about drivers being conscious and respectful for pedestrians and drivers on the road. But also, enforcement. Sometimes people need to acknowledge that we don't always follow the rules," said state Sen. Tony Hwang. Fairfield also has cameras on its school buses. State law bans drivers from passing within 10 feet in either direction of a school bus stopped with its red signal lights flashing. The violation carries a fine of $450.
A list of the new "School Speed Limit 20 MPH" Zones can be found on the Fairfield Police Department website.
