Lawmakers in Hartford took a significant step toward expanding automated speed cameras on state highways.

The General Assembly's Transportation Committee advanced a bill that would allow for more cameras to be installed.

Currently, automated speed cameras are only used in highway work zones.

However, cities and towns are already applying to install them in other areas.

"We've seen our roadways get more deadly and more deadly, and I do believe in hearing the testimony that these will save lives," says state Rep. Tom O'Dea (R New Canaan).

The proposed expansion plan requires the state transportation department to submit a plan by next February.
