Chase Kowalski was one of 20 children killed in the Sandy Hook school shooting.

This weekend, a group of kids from Bridgeport will honor his memory in a special way.

“(Chase) was always swimming, biking, and running," Brittany Kowalski says. "He taught himself to swim because of the Olympics."

Nearly two dozen kids from the Wakeman Boys & Girls Club will compete in Saturday's Race4Chase triathlon in Southington.

“These kids have never done something like this before," fitness trainer Evan Titus says, "Aside from maybe running around the playground or organized sports."

The group has been training rigorously at both the Madison Avenue Community Clubhouse and the Bridgeport YMCA for the past six weeks.

“We had some kids that didn’t even know how to ride bikes," Unit Executive Dir. Carlos Collazo says, "and kids that didn’t even know how to swim."

Brittany Kowalski says she feels like a proud sister seeing local kids work hard to help honor the memory of her late brother.

“Our Race4Chase group has been fantastic," Kowalski says. "It does feel like a family, and I get to have those 'proud sister' moments still."
