It's called the Pizza Capital of the USA, and for a good reason.
When Italian immigrants settled in New Haven, Pizza, pronounced Ah-Beetz, was the food of the poor. Now it's a favorite food for Americans.
A new exhibit at the New Haven Museum celebrates the history behind what has become such an iconic food, the "Big 3" in New Haven — Pepe's, Sally's and Modern-- and the effects pizza has made on history.
“Pronounced Ah-Beetz” is co-curated by Jason Bischoff-Wurstle, from the museum and producers of the documentary "Pizza, a Love Story, " Gorman Bechard, Dean Falcone, and Colin M. Caplan. A large part of the exhibit includes film clips from the documentary, and a few of the oldest pizza artifacts in the world.
Along with the exhibit, no trip to New Haven would be complete without a taste of history. Author and Historian Colin M. Caplan of Taste of New Haven hosts pizza tours, and says stop by Wooster Street, or State Street, but don't leave the city until you have grabbed a slice.
The exhibit is on view until October of 2027.
