Stratford Public Schools announced Monday that a Stratford High school student has died after she became seriously ill over the holidays.

Kristina Sinche traveled to Colombia with her family to celebrate New Year's, according to a GoFundMe.

During the trip, she became seriously ill, and doctors discovered a brain tumor.

She underwent two surgeries in Colombia. Her family then arranged for an air ambulance to bring her back to Connecticut for treatment and taken to Yale Children's Hospital.

Kristina was declared brain dead at the hospital.

Her family described Kristina as sweet, loving and kind-hearted girl.

"Khristina's loss is felt deeply across our school district, and our hearts remain with her family, friends, classmates, and all who knew and loved her. As a community, we continue to surround Khristina's family with compassion, care, and respect. I ask that we honor their privacy while keeping them in our thoughts and prayers," said Superintendent Heather Borges in a statement.

There will be a public visitation from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Adzima Funeral Home in Stratford.
