Some homeowners may be digging out more than just their driveways - roofs and gutters may need attention after the heavy accumulation of ice and snow.

Ice dams can form which can make your roof vulnerable to leaks.

Planning ahead could potentially save you thousands of dollars. Andrew Prchal, president of Gunner Roofing, recommends people make sure their gutters are not full of debris.

"If, unfortunately, you do have a gutter that is detached from the roof, and a lot of ice is just sitting in there and just pushed away from the roof. you might have to replace that gutter. Depending on the length, that could run anywhere from $1,000 upwards of $3,000 to $4,000. So, the biggest thing is prevention," says Prchal.

Prchal also advises to stay off the ladder with all the snow and ice around.
