When you think about Palm Sunday on Long Island, you wouldn’t expect to see actual palm trees, but that’s the reality outside our studios because these are not your typical, tropical palm species.

Island Wide Palm trees has made a business out of planting and protecting cold-tolerant palm trees for customers across the tristate area. There are a few varieties to choose from, but the most popular are known as Windmill Palms Trachycarpus fortunei.

Windmill palms are capable of surviving temperatures down to 10 degrees.

The trees are cared for by a local company, Island Wide Palm Trees, which specializes in bringing cold-hardy palms to the tri-state area. The species planted outside the studio is a windmill palm, one of the most cold-tolerant palm trees in the world.
