With temperatures recently dipping into the low 20s, one Chester farm had to get creative to protect its fruit crops.

Alstede Farms worked through the night to set up a range of methods to safeguard its orchards and fields from frost — from anti-frost candles to double row covers shielding the strawberry patches.

The farm used Frost Busters to blow 200-degree Fahrenheit air through the apple orchards, while anti-frost candles were placed near the pear, cherry, and plum trees to raise temperatures by up to four degrees.

Three large fans also helped circulate air throughout the apple orchards to prevent cold air from settling.

These measures can help protect delicate buds from overnight cold snaps, especially as the farm welcomes crowds for its ongoing spring events.

Alstede Farms offers visitors the chance to purchase fresh produce, meet farm animals, and enjoy homemade ice cream — watch News 12’s Road Trip feature on Alstede Farms.
