NYPD officials say officers stopped two boys - aged 14 and 12 - before they could climb on top of a moving subway train in the Bronx. It is part of what parents say is a growing and dangerous social media trend.

The NYPD says the juveniles were spotted on April 8 hanging off the back of an express 6 train near Hunts Point Avenue. Drone video shows the boys as police say they were attempting to “subway surf,” a risky stunt where riders climb or hold onto the outside of trains.

Officers intercepted the boys at the Parkchester station before they could make their way onto the top of the train, authorities said. Police also say the 14-year-old was found with an MTA door key — something investigators are still working to determine how he obtained.

The incident is one of dozens this year. According to the NYPD, 47 would-be subway surfers have been stopped so far in 2026.

But not every case ends safely.

In October, two teenage girls died while riding on top of a train in Brooklyn, highlighting the deadly consequences of the stunt.

“It’s a thing of the past — I thought,” said Bronx resident Pius Amoh after watching the video. “This is top of the list of dumbest things you can do."

Police say the two boys involved in the April 8 incident now face multiple charges, including reckless endangerment and trespassing.

Authorities are urging parents to talk to their children about the dangers of subway surfing, warning that the thrill is not worth the risk.
