A basement fire just after midnight forced two Milford residents and their dog from their home, but no one was injured thanks to working smoke detectors.

Firefighters say they arrived to find smoke in the area and climbed a 250‑foot uphill driveway, where the homeowner reported the basement was burning and everyone had escaped.

The fire was contained to the basement, and officials say smoke detectors woke the two sleeping occupants in time for them to get out safely.

Two people and a dog were displaced, and the American Red Cross was notified. The cause is under investigation.
