Three people, including a 6-year-old child and her mother, were injured in a shooting Sunday night in Passaic, and city officials say investigators believe the intended target was missed.
Police responded to the area of 79 Sherman St. at about 8:55 p.m. May 17 for a report of a shooting involving multiple victims, according to the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office.
A 27-year-old woman from Wallington, her 6-year-old daughter, and a 20-year-old woman from Passaic were struck by gunfire and suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening, officials said.
In a statement Monday, Passaic Mayor Hector Lora said a 23-year-old man was also shot at but was not hit. The mayor said preliminary findings indicate the shooting was an isolated incident in which the intended target was missed, resulting in injuries to three bystanders.
Lora said one woman suffered a graze wound to the arm, while the mother and child sustained leg injuries.
The mayor said there is no indication of an ongoing threat to the public and that police have increased patrols in the area while investigators pursue leads.
