Thousands in Stamford have their power back on after Saturday night's strong winds and rain knocked down an American flag that flew into transmission lines.

Fire officials say they were called just after 8 p.m. Saturday to 707 Washington Blvd., the site of the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) headquarters, where an American flag flew off the building and was found on top of nearby power lines.

The flag and wires caught fire, which was extinguished by firefighters quickly.

Eversource officials say around 5,000 customers lost power after the flag caught on fire.

3,000 of those customers had their power back on after 20 minutes.

Crews worked throughout the night and restored power to the remaining residents.
