Norwalk firefighters responded late Wednesday night to a fire inside a three-story multifamily home on South Main Street.

Firefighters stretched a hose to quickly knock down the fire, which was located in a rear apartment.

The fire was contained to the kitchen and dining area. Smoke and water damage extended throughout the affected unit.

Firefighters searched all floors and confirmed that no occupants were inside.

There were no civilian or firefighter injuries but during search operations, firefighters located a cat inside the fire apartment and removed it from the building. The animal succumbed to smoke inhalation.

The fire displaced two occupants, who received assistance from the American Red Cross. Occupants of the remaining three apartments were able to return to their homes.
