Bridgeport school superintendent says his top job is setting priorities for the new academic year now that classrooms are empty following the last day of school.

Dr. Royce Avery told News 12 on Saturday that he spent the past week meeting with teachers, students and parents to assess the state of the district.

"It feels so good being out in the community, visiting with parents and knowing that they feel we are making great strides addressing chronic absenteeism in the district, having a brand new enrollment center, really making sure that we make that connection with parents who are coming into the district, and really making sure we get input from our students, making sure parents are connected and understanding what we are doing," Avery said. "The city, the city council, the delegation, they have done a good job partnering with this district, and we have to continue that work."

Avery said despite the many challenges the district is facing, with funding gaps topping that list, his goal is to keep everybody focused on giving Bridgeport kids the best possible education.
