Fairfield County Children Take to the Water for Annual Boat/Camp Adventure

A group of Fairfield County children is getting the chance to experience Long Island Sound firsthand while learning about boating safety and enjoying a day on the water.
Boat/Camp gives underserved children attending ROSCCO's summer camp the opportunity to explore the Sound aboard local boats, with volunteers sharing their time, knowledge and love of the water.
Organizers say the program is designed to help children build confidence, learn about boating and create lasting summer memories.
The annual event is hosted by the Darien Sail and Power Squadron in partnership with ROSCCO and Person-to-Person. It is supported by several local organizations, including the Noroton Yacht Club, Darien Boat Club, Darien Police Marine Unit, Norwalk Seaport Association and other community partners.
Darien Sail and Power Squadron Commander Fred Elliott says the day is filled with adventure, including visits to local landmarks.
"We will visit some really neat places nearby. We will go to Green Ledge Lighthouse. We will go to Sheffield Island,” said Elliot. “We will cruise up and down the Five Mile River. We will make a stop in Ziegler's Cove where there are pirates — very dangerous pirates. And we will take little cruises around the Sound,"
The day wraps up with an ice cream social, giving the children a chance to celebrate the experience together.
