A 50-year-old man was shot and killed Tuesday morning while riding a motorbike in Van Nest, according to police.

Police say the shooting happened around 6 a.m. on Sagamore Street. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene as investigators spent hours collecting evidence.

Neighbors said they were jolted awake by the sound of gunfire.

“I said, ‘Oh, my God, that’s it.’ I jumped out of my bed,” neighbor Darrel Williams said.

Family and friends later gathered at the scene, identifying the victim as “Ray,” and watched as the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner took his body away.

“He’s a family friend… it was just so random. We didn’t even know what happened. We just woke up and we found out,” one family friend said.

Another neighbor said he had spoken with the victim just hours before the shooting.

“He was a decent guy. The last time I saw him was at 4 a.m. on his motorcycle under the rain, and we talked.”

Police are searching for a man with a light complexion, approximately 5 feet, 6 inches tall and in his mid-30s. Investigators say he was last seen wearing a black hat and white sweater before fleeing in a blue Toyota toward White Plains Road.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the NYPD Crime Stoppers hotline.
