Fire breaks out in Garden City basement, forces 10 stores to close
Fire marshals say no injuries were reported, but repairs will need to be made to the damaged electrical system as well as damage checks to the gas pipes before stores can be occupied again.
A Saturday afternoon fire in a Garden City jewelry store basement forced the closure of 10 stores.
The Nassau County Fire Marshal's office says the Garden City Fire Department responded to a call for an outlet smoking in the basement of a three-story building at 815 Franklin Ave. around 1 p.m.
The automatic fire alarm system notified occupants to evacuate the building.
About 12 departments and approximately 75 firefighters brought the fire under control in 55 minutes, according to fire marshals.

The Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office and Nassau County Police Department Arson/Bomb Squad were investigating the fire as of Saturday afternoon.
A cause of the fire was not immediately known.
