Starting Sunday, a part of the parking garage for the Stamford Town Center mall will be hosting a monthly series of concerts featuring dance music.
"We wanted it to be a little minimalistic, and kind of have a different energy," said Gene Morrell, who created the series. "Once you see the whole thing put together, you'll understand."
It is called "The Annex Project," named after the section of the garage where it will be held.
"This is something cool, hidden in the city and that's what I'm trying to prove - that there's a lot of cool stuff hidden," Morrell said.
After growing up in Stamford and Norwalk, Morrell spent the last 20 years putting on similar events in New York, Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
"The first nightclub I ever worked at was across the street (from the garage) and I parked here and I realized I wanted to do something here," he remembered. "I don't think the city was ready, and now i think it is."
After wanting to come back home, he says he saw a need for something like the concert series in Stamford.
"The idea was not to have to travel to New York just to see a concert, or to see anything that was large scale," he explained.
The headlining DJs are the sort of names that would be playing in a bigger city.
OMNOM will start things off on Sunday, then Laidback Luke is booked for September.
"(The artists) love this market because it's an untapped market," Morrell said, "it's something that's just never been on their radar, and we're adding something new for them."
The 1,500 tickets for the first show are almost all sold out, but Morrell says the plan is for a bigger number to be available for future concerts.
Although some residents and people who work in Stamford voiced concerns to News 12 about the noise, or amount of congestion it might create, Morrell says the city has been helpful throughout the planning, and has been "pushing very hard to make this correct for everyone around us."
The shows will also all start a 2 p.m., which Morrell thinks will limit people from getting too wild.
"Maybe they moved out of the city because they wanted to be a little more adult," he said. "I think having a day party is a good energy."
