As students head back to school across Connecticut, police are reminding drivers to watch for school buses and stop when required by law.

More school districts are now using cameras on school buses to catch drivers who fail to stop when buses are picking up or dropping off students.

"When a school bus is stopped and its red lights are flashing, Connecticut law requires motorists to come to a stop," said Watertown Police Chief Josh Bernegger.

Drivers approaching from either direction must stop at least 10 feet from a school bus when its red lights are flashing, Bernegger said.

Police say the cameras are intended to improve safety for students as they travel to and from school.

In Connecticut, the fine for failing to stop for a school bus is $250.
