Fairfield Animal Control and the Fairfield Police Department are warning residents after receiving multiple reports of aggressive coyote activity in the Mill Hill Road area and nearby neighborhoods.
According to officials, the coyotes have approached people, vehicles, homes and dogs. Some residents reported that coyotes attacked their dogs, including larger breeds.
Animal Control said the behavior is unusual because the coyotes do not appear to be afraid of people, which is not typical for wild coyotes.
The coyote has been seen roaming the 1200–1300 block of Mill Hill Road, the 1600 block of Bronson Road, Whites Hill Lane, and nearby trails.
Authorities are urging residents to take precautions to protect themselves and their pets, including:
Keeping pets indoors whenever possible.
Never leaving pets outside unattended, even in fenced yards.
Keeping dogs on a leash and close by when outdoors.
Avoiding any attempt to approach, follow or interact with a coyote.
Removing outdoor food sources, including pet food and unsecured garbage.
Never feeding coyotes or other wildlife.
Residents who spot a coyote are asked to contact Fairfield Animal Control at 203-254-4857. If Animal Control is unavailable, call the Fairfield Police Department's non-emergency line at 203-254-4800.
