Horizon Organic Dairy is voluntarily recalling thousands of cases of its chocolate milk after receiving consumer complaints that the packages appeared "bloated" and the milk may spoil prematurely.

The recall, which was initiated last month, involved 12-packs and 18-packs of Horizon's shelf-stable 1% chocolate milk in 8-ounce cartons. In a statement on its website, the company says the recall was prompted by complaints from consumers about product packaging that appeared bloated and contents that may be subject to "premature spoilage and may have an unpleasant taste, odor, and/or texture."

The company said it is investigating the cause of the issues and plans to take "corrective and preventive actions" to prevent the problem from reoccurring. Anyone who purchased the milk included in the recall is advised to throw it away, keep your receipts and contact the company at 1-888-494-3020 for more information and to see if you might be eligible for a refund.

The specific UPC codes and best before/by dates associated with the voluntarily recalled chocolate milk products include:

  • 12-pack (UPC 742365002700) — Best Before/By: 28 JAN 2027; 30 JAN 2027; 31 JAN 2027; 01 FEB 2027; 02 FEB 2027; 03 FEB 2027

  • 18-pack (UPC 742365208867) — Best Before/By: 31 JAN 2027; 01 FEB 2027; 02 FEB 2027

According to Horizon Organic's website, their products were distributed nationwide to stores including Target, CVS, Walmart, Shoprite and Wegman's.
