A judge has ordered New York City Hall to turn over communications with the rent guidelines board from the months leading up to its vote to freeze rents.
The order comes as part of a lawsuit filed by a group of landlords seeking to overturn the rent freeze, which covers roughly one million rent-stabilized apartments.
The landlords claim Mamdani’s administration improperly influenced the independent board, arguing the vote fulfilled a campaign promise rather than an independent review of the data.
The historic rent freeze is scheduled to take effect on Oct. 1.
News 12 reached out to Mamdani’s office for comment.
Deputy Press Secretary Matt Rauschenbach provided the following statement:
“The Law Department will continue to vigorously defend the Rent Guidelines Board, and we stand by our position that the RGB acted appropriately upon its review of the full body of data presented to the board.”
