New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has signed new legislation aiming to protect children from Artificial Intelligence chatbots and internet-connected home baby monitors.
The first bill prohibits AI chatbots from engaging in certain interactions with minors, including posing as friends or romantic partners.
It also bars chatbots from retaining sensitive information about a minor’s mental or physical health.
The second bill safeguards baby monitors with privacy vulnerabilities.
“Earlier this year, we learned that feeds from more than one million internet-connected baby monitors were easily viewable by just clicking onto a website,” Hochul explained.
The bill requires baby monitors sold in New York to include “safety features that protect against unauthorized access and to include warning labels to let parents know the risks.”
Violations could come with civil penalties costing up to $25,000.
