A 20-year-old Bridgeport man was arrested Sunday for illegally possessing a gun that he used to fatally shoot a man at the P.T. Barnum public housing complex in August. It is an incident that the Office of the State's Attorney determined was self-defense, police say.
Syncaire Williams was served a felony warrant by officers and has been charged with criminal possession of a firearm in the shooting of Johnny Nesmith.
Nesmith was killed on Aug. 9.
Surveillance video showed that both men fired at each other near Building 21 around 1 a.m. following a reunion of residents. Nesmith was shot multiple times and later died at Bridgeport Hospital.
Authorities say Williams was not shot.
Witnesses told detectives that Williams had beaten and robbed Nesmith at the complex a few weeks before the shooting, but Nesmith did not report the incident to police.
Police say Williams was served with the warrant after he was arrested Sunday for a home invasion and burglary that occurred at a home on Kent Avenue.
Williams was given a bond of $750,000 on the firearm charge. His bond in the home invasion case is $300,000.
