Nearly 7,000 came out to Sherwood Island State Park Sunday to take part in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in Westport.

The event was the 23rd annual installment of the fundraiser, which organizers say raised about $500,000 this year.

Some came as supporters of family members or friends of those affected by breast cancer, while survivors came to share their stories of courage.

The funds raised go toward support for those affected, as well as for awareness for necessary resources like mammograms and self-examinations that can detect breast cancer early on.
