Southwestern Connecticut residents are gearing up for a 5 cent deposit on all water bottles, which will take effect Thursday.
The bill covers water bottles and flavored waters, like Fruit2O and Vitamin Water, while sports drinks and teas are excluded. Miers Limited Redemption Center in Stratford expects to take in at least 30 percent more bottles under the new law.
Lawmakers say the deposit will encourage residents to recycle their bottles, which will keep more litter off the streets. It is estimated the new deposit will bring in about $17 million a year.
