Emergency dispatch workers were honored in Norwalk Wednesday as part of Public Safety Telecommunications Week.
The 911 workers at the Communication Center inside the Norwalk Police Department received a special proclamation that honors them for the work they do 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The dispatchers say they never know what the emergency is going to be on the other end of that phone call. It's estimated that they answer upwards of 40,000 calls a year in Norwalk. They also handle the fire and EMS calls for the city.
Bob Quigley, dispatch supervisor, says that the dispatchers may ask a lot of questions when people call 911, but it's for their own good. He says the dispatcher just wants to understand what's happening so that the proper equipment and personnel are sent to the scene.
Every year, 911 dispatchers are honored during this week nationwide.
