This Saturday is the unofficial kickoff of the spring fishing season, allowing for state anglers to keep their catch.

It's a pastime that spans generations.

"It's what a lot of people look forward to. It's tradition for a lot of families to go out on opening day," said Rich Mahoney at Fisherman's World in Norwalk.

The second week of April in Connecticut marks the end of catch-and-release trout season. So freshwater fishermen are now ready to cast their lines for keeps.

"It gives you something to do in the early spring after you've been locked up all winter," said Mahoney.

Workers at Fisherman's World who have been stocking and selling equipment say it is a day they too have looked forward to.

"It brings back a lot of memories. I grew up around here fishing in local rivers, so it's something I always did growing up. I've been coming to the shop with fishing opening day since I was 4 years old. It's nice to see. It keeps the sport going," said Mahoney.

Fishing is something families have enjoyed together all over America for generations.

"You see these kids grow up and become young adults and keep fishing and keep teaching the next generation. It's really cool," said Mahoney.

You can get a fishing license at many bait and tackle shops across the state. Connecticut residents can get an inland freshwater permit for $28. There is a special trout-salmon stamp for $5, and saltwater permits are $10. Saltwater fishing continues all year long.

Residents have to be over the age of 16 to get a license.
