Animal abandonment increases in failing economy

Another sign of the failing economy is visible in southwestern Connecticut animal shelters.
The manager of the Stamford Animal Care and Control Center says the shelter has definitely seen an increase in abandoned animals. Shelter officials say many pet owners who drop off their pets are heartbroken, but they just can?t care for their pets anymore due to tough financial times.
The center currently has a waiting list to accept pets into the shelter as a result of the increase in animals.
The Humane Society of Connecticut estimates a 5 percent increase this year because of economic hardships.
The center will hold a pet adoption day on Saturday, Aug. 23.
