Animal rights groups are calling on Connecticut lawmakers to ban leg hold traps.

The traps snap shut on an animal's leg and are often used to target foxes and coyotes.

A video shot in the woods near Briscoe Road showing a red fox struggling to escape from a leg trap prompted Cathy Kangas, a member of the U.S. Humane Society, to urge state lawmakers to ban the traps.

"If 85 other countries around the world have said it's cruel and it's not needed, we need to move on and be a little more progressive," she says.

Chip Stahl, of Animal Wildlife Solutions, says traps actually contain rubber lining to minimize injuries.

"The hundreds of coyotes that I have caught, not one of them has had a broken leg, a chewed-off foot," he says.

According to the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, anyone who sets a trap must undergo state safety classes to meet the license requirements to do so.
