The 43rd annual WICC Surfside Hotel Greatest Bluefish Tournament On Earth begins at midnight Saturday along Long Island Sound.
The deadline to register is 11:59 p.m. Friday.
Participants have the chance to win more than $40,000 in prizes, including $25,000 for the biggest bluefish caught.
Organizers say the remnants of Hurricane Erin will not impact the sound and this weekend will be perfect weather for fishing.
"It's always been in Long Island Sound which is obviously Connecticut and the North Shore Long Island, but we've expanded it to include…the eastern end of Long Island Sound and the opening to Block Island Sound. A lot of fishers over the last few years have asked for us to incorporate that, there's bit more bluefish there, and that's where they like to go fishing on their boats," says Allan Lamberti, a program coordinator for the tournament.
Lamberti says one of the biggest bluefish ever caught in the last few years weighed close to 22 pounds.
