Bridgeport officials say people who need heating assistance can now apply for aid through the "Operation Fuel" program.
The Salvation Army in Bridgeport is one of several local organizations where people in need of emergency energy assistance can apply for $500 to help with their heat bills on a one-time basis.
Beverely Donald, 70, spent Thursday going from organization to organization in search of help with her heating bill. She said she kept getting turned away.
"I have very bad allergies and the allergies act up very bad when I'm worrying. When I worry, I can't breathe. I'm short of breath and I don't sleep at night. I'm going through some difficult times," Donald says.
Officials say that residents who apply for assistance must be 30 days overdue on their bill or have a disconnect notice to be eligible.
